Samburu, Shaba and Buffalo Springs National Reserves
Samburu, Buffalo Springs, and Shaba form a big block of conservation area in the remote Central Northern Kenya. The lifeline of these reserves is the Ewaso Nyiro River.
Samburu, Shaba and Buffalo Springs National Reserves are located just north of the equator in the rain-shadow of Mt. Kenya on the banks of the Ewaso Ngiro River these 3 reserves protect 300 sq km of mountains, plains, savannah and scrub desert.
Not particularly well known Samburu, Shaba and Buffalo Springs National Reserves offer an opportunity to enjoy the Kenyan wilderness away from the crowds. Important elephant migration corridors exist in this heartland, as well as northern specialty species like reticulated giraffe, Somali ostrich, beisa oxryx and gernuk.
Buffalo Springs and Samburu Reserve are separated by the Ewaso Nyiro River and thus share the same ecosystem. An unexplained phenomenon is the presence of the Common Zebra in Buffalo springs and the absence of the species in the Samburu, just across the river.
The presence of the Ewaso Nyiro river (shared by Samburu, Shaba and Buffalo Springs National Reserves) – and its shady trees – attracts plenty of wildlife. Giraffe, buffalo, waterbuck and zebra (including the endangered Grevy’s zebra) from the surrounding savannah plains trek to the water. Lion, leopard and cheetah are also quite easy to spot, thanks in part to the lack of grass cover. For the birders, around 365 species have been recorded and the river area is particularly rewarding.
Apart from the usual game drive and cultural tours and bird watching, a unique activity on offer at Samburu, Shaba and Buffalo Springs National Reserves is a trekking safari. Samburu warriors will guide you through the rugged hills. This is your chance to track elephant on foot, follow a honey-guide bird through the bush to find the hidden nests and learn the survival techniques of the Samburu people.
